Nepal’s traditional tattoos meet modern aesthetics

Oct 04, 2026

Lalitpur, Nepal is hosting the Himalayan Tattoo Summit 0.3, bringing together more than 100 tattoo artists from Nepal and neighbouring India. The event showcases designs that blend traditional cultural and religious motifs with modern tattoo styles. Artists are presenting tattoos featuring figures such as Ganesh, the Living Goddess Kumari, Buddha and Hanuman, alongside contemporary styles including realism, dotted and Japanese tattooing. Nepal’s tattoo culture has evolved over the years. Traditionally linked to communities, spiritual beliefs, Jatras and Melas, tattooing once relied on natural ingredients such as coal, milk and plants for colours. Today, modern inks and tattoo machines have transformed the craft, allowing younger generations to express identity, beliefs and ideas through contemporary tattoo art.
