Baya River flows again with new energy
May 25, 2026
Bihar’s Baya River, a vital tributary supporting agriculture, ecology, and rural livelihoods, has witnessed a major revival through collective efforts by the district administration, GIZ India, HESCO, local communities, and women volunteers. Flowing nearly 212 kilometers from East Champaran to the Ganga near Begusarai, the river had suffered from heavy siltation and water hyacinth blockage. Desilting, dredging, river-link restoration, cleanliness drives, and plantation campaigns helped restore its natural flow through the Budhi Gandak–Noon–Baya–Ganga link. The rejuvenation has improved irrigation, boosted farm productivity, and revived greenery in surrounding villages. Under the Namami Gange Programme, conservation of small tributaries like the Baya is being prioritized to strengthen India’s river ecosystem and rural sustainability.
