Transforming animal husbandry, empowering rural Odisha

Bhubaneswar (Odisha), September 14 (ANI): For millions of rural families in Odisha, animal husbandry has always been part of everyday life. Today, the sector is emerging as a powerful engine of livelihoods, income generation, employment and rural economic growth. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha is building a stronger and more productive livestock economy through targeted schemes, financial support, modern infrastructure and improved veterinary services. At the heart of this transformation is the Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana, with a substantial budget outlay of Rs. 1,423 crore, aimed at increasing daily milk production and benefiting more than 15 lakh dairy farmers across the state. Under the Gopalan Yojana and Buffalo Entrepreneurship Development Scheme, farmers receive 60 to 70 per cent subsidy for establishing dairy units, enabling them to expand livestock-based livelihoods and participate in a growing dairy economy. Animal welfare remains a priority. Under the Mukhyamantri Prani Kalyan Yojana, 13 new Goshalas were constructed during 2025-26, providing shelter for around 1,100 stray animals, while 97 Goshalas received feeding and maintenance support covering more than 25,000 stray and destitute animals.
