Aug 24, 2025

Shimla (HP), August 24 (ANI): Shimla (HP), Shimla has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative in India by fitting stray dogs with GPS-enabled collars featuring QR codes, alongside an anti-rabies vaccination drive. “This will help digitally track each dog’s location, vaccination, and sterilisation status,” said Surinder Chauhan, Mayor of Shimla. So far, over 2,000 stray dogs have been vaccinated, with aggressive ones marked using red tags. A digital dog census is also underway, and the initiative has seen participation from several Indian states. Local resident Pradeep Kumar welcomed the effort but urged better implementation and stricter accountability. MLA Harish Janartha stated, “We’ve recorded 4,000–4,500 stray dogs across Shimla’s 34 wards. With 2–4 dog bite cases reported daily, this campaign is crucial.” The campaign, launched on August 15, runs till August 29, with collar installations expanding in phase two. Feeding zones are being designated to manage stray dog movement more effectively.
