More Female Calves, More Milk: Sexed Semen Technology Delivers Results in Gujarat

Mar 20, 2026

Gujarat is witnessing a transformation in dairy farming through the adoption of sexed semen technology, which significantly increases the birth of female calves. To scale up its use, the state established the Gujarat Bovine Semen Sexing Institute in Patan. Since June 2021, over 3.19 lakh doses have been administered, resulting in more than 34,000 calf births, with over 91% being female. The cost per dose has also dropped from ₹300 to ₹50, making it accessible for farmers. In Patan’s Koita village, farmers like Shrawanji Mafaji and Mohammad Taufikbhai report higher female calf births, increased milk production, and rising incomes. The initiative is strengthening cattle quality, boosting dairy output, and supporting rural livelihoods across the state.
