15-Member Nepal Panel to Review Flood Damage, Reconstruction and Climate Risks

Kathmandu (Nepal), September 22 (ANI): Nepal’s House of Representatives has unanimously approved a 15-member special parliamentary committee to study the devastating Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods and their impact on the Himalayan region. The committee, proposed by Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, will examine the disaster’s causes, climate change impacts, damage and risks to downstream communities. It will recommend measures for rehabilitation, sustainable reconstruction, disaster risk reduction, legal and institutional reforms and climate justice. The panel will also review changes involving Himalayan temperatures, glaciers, glacial lakes, snowfall and watersheds, while assessing ways to strengthen research and preparedness. The committee has been given three months to submit its report, including immediate priorities and a roadmap for reconstruction. The August 26 floods severely affected Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, causing extensive loss of life and infrastructure.
