World Bank, UN pledge further aid for Ghana's COVID-19 vaccine rollout, economic recovery

Accra (Ghana), May 27: The World Bank and the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday pledged additional aid to push forward Ghana's COVID-19 vaccine rollout and economic recovery.
The World Bank prepares to finance more than 200 million U.S. dollars for existing pandemic relief programs in Ghana, said Agata Pawlowska, the bank's operations manager for the West African country.
The bank has so far supported Ghana with a total of 235.8 million dollars in COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control, Pawlowska told Xinhua at a UN meeting on humanitarian.
The bank has just approved a 100 million-dollar project for social protection, educational support, and skills development, through the ongoing programs, she said. "It is something we are working on with the (Ghanaian) government for the future."
Charles Abani, UN resident coordinator for Ghana, said that despite a slowdown of infection rate in Ghana, the UN remains committed to supporting Ghana via COVAX to get the vaccines necessary for herd immunity.
