Vietnam's daily COVID-19 infections surge to new record, nearly 2.9 mln in total

Hanoi (Vietnam), February 23: Vietnam registered a new record of 55,879 daily COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, up 8,999 cases from Monday, according to its Ministry of Health.
The new infections, logged in 62 localities nationwide, included 55,871 domestically transmitted and eight imported.
The epidemic hotspot capital Hanoi logged its highest-ever number of daily infections with 6,860 cases on Tuesday, up 1,383 from Monday. Other northern localities with high number of transmissions included Bac Ninh province with 2,842 cases and Bac Giang province with 2,500 cases.
The infections brought the country's total tally to 2,890,252 with 39,682 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 2,305,081 COVID-19 patients, or 80 percent of the infections, have so far recovered.
Around 192 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including 175.2 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.
Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Tuesday, it has registered more than 2.8 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in April 2021, said the health ministry.
