Trump may increase troops in Poland, admits Ukraine war is difficult to solve

Washington [US], September 4: President Donald Trump said the US may send more troops to Poland, while admitting that ending the fighting in Ukraine is more difficult than he thought.
Reuters on September 4 quoted US President Donald Trump when receiving Polish President Karol Nawrocki saying that the US could increase its troop presence and commit to ensuring Poland's defense capabilities.
Welcoming the Polish leader with a flyover of military aircraft, Mr Trump affirmed that the US has a great relationship with Poland. Asked if he planned to keep US troops in Poland, President Trump replied yes. "We will put more troops there if they want," he said.
The presence of US troops on NATO's eastern flank, including Poland, remains a key issue for Warsaw amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine .
Mr Nawrocki said after the meeting that the two sides discussed increasing the number of US troops and that Mr Trump had made a strong commitment to Poland's security.
Mr. Trump extended an invitation to Mr. Nawrocki just days after the Polish leader was sworn in in early August. Mr. Trump then intervened to ensure Mr. Nawrocki was included in a call about Ukraine with European leaders.
Regarding the Ukraine issue, President Trump said he plans to have phone calls in the next few days, after last month's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska (USA) failed to produce a breakthrough.
A White House official said that on September 4, Mr. Trump is expected to have a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The French presidency said earlier on September 3 that several European leaders, including Mr. Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron, would call Mr. Trump on the afternoon of September 4.
Speaking to reporters at the White House while meeting Mr Nawrocki, Mr Trump said he had no message for the Russian leader.
"He knows where I stand and he's going to make a decision one way or the other. Whatever the decision is, we're either going to be happy or we're not happy, and if we're not happy, you're going to see action taken," Trump said.
The US president did not explain what he meant, but he has previously mentioned the possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Russia.
Mr Trump also said the war in Ukraine would be resolved "one way or another", but he did not expect ending it to be so difficult.
"I thought it would be a lot easier. I thought it would be a medium problem, probably one of the easiest. Sometimes you never know with war," he said.
