Taveuni road crash claims another life

Oct 04, 2026

Washington [US], October 4: Police are warning of the deadly consequences of alcohol behind the wheel after another fatal road crash on Taveuni Island early this morning.
A woman was killed after the vehicle she was travelling in with five others veered off the road along Barotu shortly after 2am.
She was rushed to the Taveuni hospital but was pronounced dead by medical officials.
One passenger remains in critical condition, while the others are being treated for their injuries.
The driver fled the scene, with investigations now underway.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe says the two recent fatal crashes in the North are believed to be linked to alcohol.
He says awareness campaigns will only work if people choose to follow road safety advice, calling for a change in mindset as the festive season approaches.
The national road death toll now stands at 41, compared to 56 for the same period last year.
Police are reminding drivers, passengers and pedestrians that everyone has a role to play in preventing road deaths.
