San Jose [Costa Rica], June 15: Nicaragua's former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, the first elected female head of state in Latin America, died at the age of 95 in neighbouring Costa Rica, her family said on Saturday.

The 'President of Peace,' as she was known, led Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997, following her surprise election victory over the left-wing Sandinista Revolution government led by Daniel Ortega.
