Mr. Trump suddenly changed his mind, saying Ukraine could regain all its territory

Sep 24, 2025

Washington [US], September 24: US President Donald Trump unexpectedly suggested that Ukraine could regain all the territories that Russia has controlled since the outbreak of hostilities in 2022.
Writing on the social network Truth Social on September 23, after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky , Mr. Trump stated: "I think Ukraine, with support from the European Union (EU), is in a position to fight and win, bringing the entire territory of Ukraine back to its original state."
Mr. Trump said he made the above assessment after learning about the military and economic situation of Russia and Ukraine, believing that Moscow is suffering economic difficulties. "With time, patience and financial support from Europe, especially NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), bringing the borders back to the way they were before the war started is a feasible scenario, why not?", Mr. Trump added.
President Zelensky said that Mr. Trump's statement on social media was a big change. In an interview with Fox News, Mr. Zelensky said he was "a little surprised" by Mr. Trump's post. He also mentioned that he had a constructive conversation with the American leader when the two met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly .
According to AFP on September 24, Mr. Trump's latest move partly reflects the White House owner's changing stance. Since the summit between Mr. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in mid-August, the peace negotiation process has not progressed, while the war situation in Ukraine has escalated.
Mr. Trump did not state what additional support the US would provide to Ukraine, other than emphasizing that Washington would continue to provide weapons to NATO and "let NATO do what they want."
Responding to the press on September 23, Russia's Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy said "don't get too excited about every social media post", when asked about Mr. Trump's article, according to Reuters.
