At least 15 killed as truck overturns in Bangladesh

May 26, 2026

Dhaka [Bangladesh], May 26: At least 15 people were killed when a truck carrying iron rods and extra passengers overturned on a major highway in central Bangladesh on Monday, police said.
Police officer Shamsul Alam Sarker said the accident happened in the early morning near the Saratail area in Tangail district, about 85 kilometres north-west of the capital Dhaka, after the driver lost control.
Fifteen people died at the scene and 10 others were injured when the heavily loaded truck veered off the road and overturned, he said. The injured passengers were being treated at a local hospital.
Sarker said the passengers had boarded the truck at different locations and were heading to a northern district during the rush ahead of the Eid Al Adha holiday.
Hundreds of thousands of people have begun travelling from cities and towns to their home villages as Bangladesh prepares to mark the Muslim festival this week.Bangladesh is among the countries with a high rate of road accident deaths, with crashes often blamed on lax law enforcement, reckless driving, poor road conditions and a lack of passenger awareness.
The state-run regulator, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, reported nearly 5,500 road deaths in 2025. Private counts, however, claim the figure is far higher than the government's estimate.
