Rally held for Aung San Suu Kyi

Dec 02, 2019

Yangon (Myanmar) Dec 02: Hundreds of people held a rally in Myanmar's largest city on Sunday, in a show of support for the country's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
The event took place a little more than a week before Suu Kyi will appear before the International Court of Justice, where her government faces trial for allegedly committing genocide against Rohingya Muslims.
The demonstration in Yangon drew about 700 people. Many waved Myanmar's national flag, while others held banners saying "We Stand With You, Mother Suu."
The Gambian government filed the case with the world court last month, on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. It centers on a bloody crackdown by Myanmar's security forces, which led more than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee for neighboring Bangladesh.
Myanmar's government strongly denies the genocide allegation. It says Suu Kyi will lead the defense team at the ICJ in The Hague.
The first hearings in the case will be held from Dec. 10 to Dec. 12.
