Dhaka (Bangaladesh) Nov 8: Interim captain Mahmudullah blamed the fall of wickets in the middle overs when Bangladesh were batting for their eight-wicket loss against India in the second and penultimate T20I at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium Thursday.
Asked to bat first, the Tigers got off to a good start before losing their way in the middle overs in the face of some disciplined bowling by the Indians, especially the spinners.
Bangladesh eventually finished their innings on 153 losing six wickets in their stipulated 20 overs, which proved to be inadequate in the end as India romped home in 15.4 overs.
"We knew wicket is very good to bat. It was hard and the ball was nicely coming to bat. In the middle overs, from 12-14, we lost a few wickets and our rate got slow. If there was a set batsman there then we could have scored more. I think these are the mistakes we have done in the match," Mahmudullah told the media in the post-match press conference.
"A set batsman is always important in this kind of wicket. Other batsmen can carry the momentum and give good partnerships around him. We could not continue thus we felt short.
"Openers gave us a very good start. That was a 180-plus wicket. After Soumya's [Sarkar] dismissal there were two new batters at the wicket and we took a bit of time and probably that cost us a little bit in the middle overs. The top-order batted well but we should have scored 175-plus.
"I don't think we need to change much. There are areas to improve particularly in batting. We need to identify the momentum that we have missed in this game. We should have scored 170-plus after getting a good start. We lost wickets in the middle which cost us. These are the areas we need to look on," he added.
The two teams will now turn their attention to the all-important third T20I, scheduled to be held in Indore Sunday.
