Iran rejects Canadian court rule on Ukraine plane crash

May 22, 2021

Tehran (Iran) May 22: Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday rejected a recent rule of a Canadian court on the Ukrainian plane which crashed near Tehran in January 2020.
"Everyone knows that the Canadian court has no authority to rule about this plane crash ... which took place outside of Canada," spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said at the ministry's website.
The Ukraine passenger flight was shot down on Jan. 8, 2020 by Iranian missiles shortly after it took off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport, killing all 176 people on board. Iran claimed the shooting was by accident.
The Ontario Supreme Court reportedly announced on Thursday that the shooting down of the plane was "intentional and a terrorist act." Khatibzadeh dismissed the rule of the court as "political."
